After 26 years of waiting, finally the Fluminense fans can finally celebrate. Although they suffered just a little more on Sunday. However, with the 1-0 victory over Guarani the Engenhão Stadium, Fluminense won its third title Brazilian history, which has been competed for in its present format since 1971. The "saviour" goal came 16 minutes from the end of the second half, scored by the striker Emerson. Besides tthe Brazilian championship the Tricolor has won three more major domestic trophies: the Silver Trophy in 1970, the 1984 Brazilian Championship and Brazil Cup in 2007.
On this victorious campaign, special mention should be made to Dario Conca. The Argentine ended this Brazileirão as an ever-present, the only player to take the field in all 38 rounds of the competition.
Corinthians, one those team’s fighting for the title finished the competition in third place. The club reached the last round of the Brazilian Championship needing a win against already relegated Goiás, who took the field with a reserve team to spare its athletes the finals of the Copa Sulamericana. Furthermore, they needed a Guarani victory or over Fluminense or for the match to end in a draw. While Fluminense fulfilled its role by beating Guarani at Rio de Janeiro Ronaldo's team could only draw 1-1 in the Serra Dourada Stadium,
Meanwhile, Cruzeiro finish the competition in second beating Palmeiras for 2-1. But good winds blew for the “Carioca” team. Cruzeiro finished in their best position ever since they were crowned champions back in 2003.
This is remarkable as the same Fluminense squad were almost relegated to the second division in 2009. In that occasion they had the worst attack and also the most fragile defence. In that time one renowned mathematician predicted the team had only 6% chance that they wouldn't be relegated! However, contrary to these predictions preview the team showed how to be a winner and amazingly got their “hands” in the title.
Congratulations Fluminense for a truly beautiful campaign!
